Cutting through the noise: Mitigating noise pollution at new Cambridgeshire apartment complex

Developers, Coulson Building Group, were responsible for the completion of a 68-flat site in Cambridgeshire’s Darwin Green development, situated on the outskirts of the county’s historic university city.

Targeted at busy young professionals and families, the project came with a unique set of challenges, and one of the top priorities was the reduction of noise and disruption emerging from in-unit drainage systems. With the renovation of a disused office block, it was recognised early on that current waste systems were not originally set up for residential use, so were no longer viable. For occupants living busy and often demanding lifestyles, keeping noise to a minimum would also be a necessity to provide a liveable, long-term solution that would attract future residents.

As such, Coulson Building Green turned to plumbing and drainage manufacturer, Wavin, to utilise its end-to-end service and leverage its noise-reducing range of products. These were specified to ensure that excessive noise could be kept to a minimum, and that building works could be completed in a timely and non-disruptive manner.

Challenges facing the development.

Noise concerns weren’t only set to impact the development in the immediate or short-term; with regulations surrounding noise being constantly revised and updated, Coulson Building Group wanted to ensure that the site could adapt and stay ahead of evolving building regulations. Coulson looked towards Wavin’s end-to-end soil and waste noise reduction tools, which have all been uniquely designed for buildings such as flat blocks, nursing homes and workspaces, that require the lowest levels of noise disruption.

Keeping the noise down

As part of Wavin’s end-to-end service, the developers were able to take advantage of its bespoke Soundcheck tool. This effectively simulates system acoustics throughout the final installation and delivers a comprehensive report to see whether current noise regulations are being met. As a result of this reporting, Wavin’s Acoustic Soil Plus (AS+) systems were selected for installation throughout the new development.

Designed following the success of the manufacturer’s Acoustic Soil range, AS+ features technology that uses mineral-enriched pipes to enhance the noise reduction capabilities of pipe systems. The pipes are manufactured with a unique mineral composition that increases the density of pipes within a structure, allowing for a low decibel rating of less than 10. Installed throughout the Darwin Green development, this system guarantees that the residences comfortably exceed current and future acoustic standards.

Reflecting on the use of Wavin’s AS+ pipe system, David Grundy, Associate Director at Coulson Building Group commented: “We love to see new products and innovation in the industry, and we weren’t disappointed with AS+. The system has played a key role in the provision of long-term, durable housing for Cambridgeshire’s young professionals, and we look forward to seeing Darwin Green continue to grow and thrive.”

Neil King, Technical Sales Manager at Wavin added: “When we were approached by Coulson to help them find a suitable drainage system for this property in Darwin Green, it was clear that AS+ was the perfect solution. When working on a project that converts an old commercial space into a premium residential one, it’s important to opt for a low-noise solution which will increase occupant comfort, and AS+ is a true market leader for this.”
